How to Sign a PDF Online Without Printing

Add your signature to any PDF without printing. Free, browser-based PDF signing tool with draw, type, and image options.

The Print-Sign-Scan Problem

Someone sends you a PDF to sign. The old way: print it, sign it with a pen, scan it back to PDF, and email it. That's three devices, wasted paper, and 10 minutes of your life for something that should take 30 seconds.

Electronic signatures solve this. You can sign a PDF directly on your computer or phone without ever touching a printer. And with browser-based tools, you don't even need to install software.

How to Sign a PDF Online (Step by Step)

Using our free Sign PDF tool:

  1. Open the Sign PDF tool — works on desktop and mobile.
  2. Upload your PDF — drag and drop or select from your files.
  3. Create your signature — draw it with your mouse/finger, type your name, or upload a signature image.
  4. Place the signature — click where you want the signature to appear on the page.
  5. Adjust size and position — resize and move until it looks right.
  6. Download — save the signed PDF to your device.

The entire process happens in your browser. Your document and signature are never uploaded to any server.

Three Ways to Create Your Signature

1. Draw Your Signature

Use your mouse, trackpad, or finger (on touchscreens) to draw your signature directly. This produces the most natural-looking result, especially on tablets or phones where you can use your finger or a stylus.

2. Type Your Name

Type your name and choose from several handwriting-style fonts. Quick and clean, though less personal than a drawn signature. This works well for internal documents or approvals that don't require a handwritten look.

3. Upload a Signature Image

If you've already scanned your signature or have it as an image file, upload it directly. The tool places it on the PDF at your chosen location. Pro tip: use a PNG with a transparent background for the cleanest result.

Are Electronic Signatures Legally Valid?

In most cases, yes. Electronic signatures are legally recognized in:

  • United States — ESIGN Act and UETA make electronic signatures legally equivalent to handwritten ones for most documents
  • European Union — eIDAS regulation recognizes electronic signatures, with advanced and qualified signatures having higher legal standing
  • United Kingdom — Electronic Communications Act 2000
  • Canada, Australia, and most other countries have similar legislation

However, some documents still require "wet" (physical) signatures — notarized documents, certain real estate transactions, wills, and some government forms. When in doubt, check with the recipient about their requirements.

Note: The signatures created by our tool are simple electronic signatures. For legally binding qualified electronic signatures (QES), you'll need a certified provider with identity verification.

Signing on Mobile

Our tool works great on phones and tablets. In fact, touchscreens produce more natural signatures since you can draw with your finger — just like signing on a delivery pad. The interface adapts to smaller screens automatically.

Tips for Better Signatures

  • Use a stylus on tablets for the most natural result
  • Sign bigger than you think — you can always resize smaller, but scaling up makes it blurry
  • Dark colors work best — black or dark blue are standard for signatures
  • Practice once — try the draw tool before committing to find the right speed and pressure

Multi-Page Documents

Need to sign or initial multiple pages? Navigate through the pages and place signatures or initials wherever needed. Each placement is independent, so you can put different signatures on different pages.

After Signing

Once your PDF is signed, you might want to:

Privacy Matters for Signatures

Your signature is personally identifying information. Uploading it to a third-party server creates a record that you signed a specific document at a specific time. With our browser-based tool, your signature never leaves your device — no server sees it, no database stores it.
